If knitting or crochet is part of your everyday, you know there's always another project to bring along. Join us at Patchwork for a morning of sewing as we make a handy project bag to keep your works-in-progress, yarn, hooks, and needles all in one place.
We'll be sewing a round-bottom project bag complete with a roomy lined interior, gathered exterior pockets, sturdy handles, and swivel hook and D-ring hardware to make carrying your next project a little easier. Following the Round Bottom Bag with Tucked Pockets pattern from Kokka Fabrics (designed by Mioko Sugino), we'll work through the construction together with a clarified, step-by-step set of instructions prepared by Patchwork to make the process approachable and easy to follow.
Whether you're an avid knitter or crocheter looking for a new project bag or simply want to make a thoughtful handmade gift for the fiber artist in your life, this workshop is a lovely place to start!
What You'll Learn
Fabric layout and cutting
How to construct and attach gathered exterior pockets
Sewing curved seams and constructing a round bag bottom
Working with lining and finishing a bag
Attaching handles and working with bag hardware
General sewing machine techniques and construction tips
Skill Level
This workshop is designed for confident beginners with some previous sewing experience. You should be comfortable operating a sewing machine and have a basic understanding of sewing fundamentals.
If you've taken our Intro to Machine Sewing workshop, you're ready to join us! We'll be happy to offer a quick refresher on machine basics, but this class will move beyond the fundamentals covered in an introductory class.
Choose Your Fabric
You'll need 1 yard of fabric total for this project, which will cover the exterior, lining, and pockets. There are three ways to source your materials:
Purchase Fabric from Patchwork: Browse our in-studio fabric selection on the "Fabrics" page of our website and add your chosen fabric to your workshop registration at checkout. Fabric is available in ½-yard increments, and we'll take care of cutting and pre-washing it ahead of class so it's ready to go when you arrive.
Bring Your Own Fabric: You're welcome to bring 1 yard of your own fabric! We recommend a medium-weight woven fabric, such as quilting cotton, canvas, or cotton-linen, that will hold its shape and stand up to everyday use.
Create a "Patchwork" Bag: Want to mix and match? Use a combination of fabrics from our in-house collection to create a more traditional patchwork look. For this option, a $20 materials fee will be collected at the start of class, and you'll get to choose from our selection of available remnants and scraps.
Please note: Fabric purchased from Patchwork is cut to order and pre-washed for your workshop. All fabric sales are final once cut.
What's Included
Kokka Fabrics project bag pattern, used with permission, and Patchwork-prepared workshop instructions
All necessary bag hardware and materials
Use of a Janome sewing machine
All necessary sewing tools and supplies
A finished project bag to take home!
What to Bring
1 yard of pre-washed fabric, if bringing your own. If you are supplying your own fabric, please also bring matching thread.
Any snacks or drinks you’ll want during class time, enthusiasm, and a little patience as we work through a new project together!
